FESTIVALS IN FIJI
Festivals:
Hibiscus Festival - an annual event that is hosted by the Suva City Council, and takes place in Suva,
Fiji's capital. Funds raised by beauty pageants and their sponsors are distributed to charity groups within the city and surrounding areas. It is usually a one weeklong event comprising of activities for the family, and a cultural affair where cultural groups perform on stages erected at its usual venue, Albert Park.
Sugar Festival - This is another colorful event hosted at the second largest city of Fiji, Lautoka. It has a similar fundraising format with the Hibiscus Festival where pageants who represent business houses within the Lautoka City Zone, raise funds for selected groups of the community. Winners often represent the city at overseas engagements.
Bula Festival - This is a one week long Festival for Nadi Town. Many hotels support this event and support pageants who represent them. In the past years, money that was raised was aimed at maintaining the Nadi Public Hospital.
Friendly North Festival - Labasa is the main town on the island of Vanua Levu that hosts such a festive event. Similar to the other towns, pageants also raise funds for social causes, and is such an eventful weeklong occasion, ending with a parade of colorful floats through the town of Labasa.
Coral Coast Festival - Festival hosted by the Sigatoka residents, those who live on the Province of Nadroga. This Festival also attracts the support of the many resorts and hotels along the Coral Coasts area.
Provincial Days
Tailevu Women's Dollar Day - This event brings in women through out the Province, supported by their male counterpart. Funds raised are to assist with village projects.
Bulou ni Ceva - This is special fundraising event for the Province of Kadavu. Descendants of Kadavu Island who live overseas often support this day. The tradition of this event is that the opening and the closing of the Festival is either done by representatives forms the Nadroga/Navosa or Ra Province. This signifies the traditional bond that unites these places, many years ago.
Namosi Day - The Tui Namosi, who is the high chief of Namosi Province, supports this event whole-heartedly. Many have seen the evidence of such fundraising with the completion of many small village projects such as building of footpaths or bathrooms within villages.
