GEOGRAPHY OF FIJI

The formation of provinces was a colonial way of classifying Fijian villages
into clusters so the Ministry of Fijian Affairs can properly manage them. Today, you will hear or see
from some people that their village is put under a certain jurisdiction however traditionally they were
ruled by another Chief. It is important to note that in prehistoric times, the governing of people lies
in the power of the Chief. Geography does not deter a chief to extend their power from one end of the
group to another. When the colonial administration was set up in the early 1900s, district classification
began so as to ease the challenges of managing people and their resources.
Today, there are 14 Yasanas or Provinces in Fiji. Under these Provinces are Tikina or districts.
